Intermediate Word Study
Prefixes and Suffixes

Teachers this past summer (2007) engaged in discussions about instructing students in specific spelling patterns, which include a study of suffixes and prefixes. Students who master the spelling of these affixes and understand their meaning can infer the meaning of many unknown words. Approaching word study in this way supports our district goals of providing students with generative strategies for writing and reading new words. Understanding the meanings of the bits and pieces of our language furthers student ability to generate inferences about words meaning and extends their vocabulary. These lists and resources are intended to provide ideas to teachers.

Vocabulary Study: More than Word Lists!

Research and experience tells us that throwing a weekly list of vocabulary words and traditional paper and pencil activities at kids doesn’t grow vocabulary skills. Here are some alternatives for vocabulary study. It’s about more than words--so many phrases confuse students unfamiliar with idioms, metaphors and other turns of the tongue. Let’s give kids not only words, but the power to play with them.

Other resources for word study:

Although this list is far from extensive, it may provide some additional ideas for word study, including additional word lists and activities. If you are aware of a strong resource not included here, please send a description of the activity along with any photos or documents to support teacher understanding to district literacy coach Lori Jackson. If you are including student photographs, please make sure that your internet permission forms allow us to post the child’s photograph on the web. When sending internet resources, be sure to carefully cut and paste the entire URL so that we can provide working links.
