Written Response Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (http://rwproject.tc.columbia.edu) recommend that for every 20-30 minutes a student spends reading, they can be expected to spend 5-10 minutes engaged in written response. In addition to keeping a reading log, or simple list of what has been read, representatives of the project suggest that students be expected to write in response to reading through sticky note response, reader’s letters or response journals. Beginning at approximately a level J, they suggest that reading logs include both number of pages read and duration of reading, pointing out that children are unlikely to read any longer at home than we allow them to read at school. Thus, if we have an expectation that children read 20-30 minutes nightly, we must provide that much time for reading during the school day.
