DRA2 Mid-Year Data Review
Comparing DRA2 Data: Pinpointing Growth and Areas of Need in this increase. This would seem to support the need for intense, 1:1 intervention with students at this grade level. Understaffing of Reading Recovery staff may also play a role in the larger numbers of basic and below basic students reported at the second and third grade levels. When the early intervention program is fully staffed, these teachers also provide continuing support to second and third grade students.
Fluency continues to be an area of concern for many children reading at or above level 14, as many students reported in the below basic categories have not been able to demonstrate the required words per minute with texts they might otherwise have been successful with.
Teachers working with older students have expressed concerns regarding how difficult it is to change the reading patterns of students who have become ingrained in reading patterns that are orally dysfluent. It is essential that students in primary classrooms receive consistent, explicit instruction to address fluency holistically--addressing rate, phrasing, expression and accuracy.
Bob Magelky advises teachers and coaches to pay attention to the combined scores for proficient and advanced students. When these scores are combined, there is positive trend in growth through fifth grade. There is a dramatic drop in the combined number of proficient and advanced students at sixth grade. It must be noted that the numbers at these levels do not include students from the Todd County Middle School.
It is not possible to make comparisons to DRA scores from previous school years as this new version is significantly different from its predecessor. Students are being held to higher standards and the data seems to suggest that they can work to attain those standards.

Data is reported according to district ceilings and is based on an informal data review by the district literacy coaches.
