DRA Assessment

Dear Teachers,

We will be using the DRA2 assessment in all K-3 classrooms and most 4-5 classrooms during the 2007-08 school year. These kits are substantially different from previous versions currently in classroom. It is essential that these older kits not be used in any way.

In addition, the district testing schedule will be significantly different with the most important change being that DRA Assessment will not be conducted in any classroom until the first two weeks of October. This will give teachers an opportunity to fully develop classroom routines before undertaking 1:1 testing.

Ceilings have been developed for grades K-5, along with guidelines for determining below basic, basic, proficient and advanced reading levels at three points throughout the school year. Any student who meets advanced reading level expectations during the first or second testing window, will not be tested again using the DRA assessment until fall of the following school year. Teachers will continue to gather data on these children through running records and classroom observation.

The purpose in establishing ceilings for assessment is to free up instructional time, to allow teachers the opportunities to provide wide reading experiences (across genre and author) and opportunities to think deeply about texts (Mosaic Strategy Work).

                                              --Lori Jackson
