Unit Six Support

Time Periods, Culture and Revision

Although teachers are expected to consistently integrate Lakota Language and Culture across the year, this unit of study focuses on extending our understanding of culture to include other Native American groups as well as other cultures. This unit of study, at the kindergarten level, is focused around a multicultural text set supporting study of the four Lakota virtues of generosity, courage, wisdom and fortitude. Kindergarten readers are discussing cultural differences and similarities in texts read and listened to. They are encouraged to connect, question, and predict as they listen to both fiction and nonfiction books. Kindergarten writers are extending their ability to use written language to express themselves and are beginning to demonstrate early revision skills, primarily in illustrations. They are now able to reference and write the TCSD Kindergarten no excuse words correctly in the context of writing meaningful sentences and short stories. Kindergarten listeners and speakers continue to practice important phone numbers. They continue to retell and sequences events in order and are adding known poems, rhymes, songs and stories to their repertoire.
