Welcome from the Superintendent
Welcome from the Superintendent
2011
Welcome to the land of the Sicangu people and the Todd County School District.
This district is a partner with families, communities, the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and other educational groups. Our mission is to prepare the students for academic, social, cultural and spiritual success in an ever-changing world.
The administration building and curriculum center are located in Mission, along with six educational facilities. There are also seven other educational facilities in outlying areas.
Because of the geographical size of the district, it operates one of the largest school bus fleets in South Dakota. Buses travel over 3,000 miles on regular routes each day, transporting about 80% of the district’s students.
The five-member Board of Education recognizes the importance of community involvement in the operation of the schools. Parents and community members are encouraged to express their ideas, opinions and concerns, be involved and become active in the education of their children.
Curriculum, instruction and assessment processes are based on the most recent research. The average student-to-teacher ratio is about 12 to 1. Indian studies is an integral part of the district curriculum. This addresses the unique cultural environment of the rural Indian reservation.
Professional development opportunities are offered to all teachers, with costs often being assumed by the district. Sinte Gleska University, located in Mission, offers comprehensive courses in Lakota studies, four-year degrees in elementary education and human services, and graduate business courses in education. Affordable housing may be available for teachers. Insurance plans include health, dental, vision and life.
The boundaries of the district are the same as those of the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in south-central South Dakota, where some of the most beautiful scenery in the world is located.
Learning and growing opportunities for students and staff never cease in the Todd
County School District.
